The Governor's house

The Governor's house

Four-storey stone building, built in the XVIII century, was used as the men's gymnasium, and a furniture store, there were merchant's shops, bakery, pastry, sausage shop, and notary's office, and the headquarters of the grenadier regiment, and the public library, and the broadcasting center, and the artists studio, and even the inspection of fish protection and fish stock restoration...But the people of Vladimir know this building as the Governor's house, in memory of the first owner of this building and the first Governor of the town, Peter Gavrilovich Lazarev (another famous Lazarev, Mikhail Petrovich – one of the discoverers of Antarctica – he was his father).

It was assumed that the building will be used by the order of public contempt (the order was involved in the affairs of orphanages and workhouses, almshouses). However, in the new building was forced to move the Governor of Vladimir with his family: the old house in Manezhny tupic was in such critical condition that to live there was absolutely impossible. Soon from his temporary shelter, the Governor moved to a new building (today the building houses the Vladimir TV company), and the building went from one owner to another... Currently, since 1992, there has been the Vladimir art center. All this time, it introduces the people of Vladimir with the rich and varied world of the Russian culture and with the world artistic culture.

The Governor's house also has a second nickname – "the house with ghosts". Urban legend claims that the building has, indeed, the settled ghosts, and the reason for its ominous howling is the characteristic of the ventilation system, is powerless against it. The second version of the origin of the name is from the title of one article printed in the 1920s, which compared the indifferent employees of the various offices in this house with ghosts.

Accepted by the state protection of monuments of history and culture. It is the object of cultural heritage of Federal importance.

Today: Vladimir regional promotion center of fine arts.
