Route

1. The Golden Gate

Vladimir's The Golden Gate do not have analogues in European medieval architecture. Built in the XII century in Vladimir by the Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, in addition to the defensive function, it represented the main entrance to the town. Oriented to the West, The Golden Gate, symbolized the desire of the Vladimir Prince to show the greatness and wealth of the Eastern Russian lands, not inferior to the European kingdoms.

But the main feature of The Golden Gate remained fortification. Before the siege of the Mongol army of Khan Batiy, who came to the borders of the town in the winter of 1238, it remained impregnable: the invaders broke into the town through the breach in the wall fortifications.

3. The Spasskiy Hill

Recently, the attention of the visitors and the residents of Vladimir attracts one more place - the area near the Patriarch's garden with its unusual monument. The Monument to a cherry that appeared in the city was no coincidence: in pre-revolutionary times Vladimir was well - known in all Russia due to its cherry that grew here. There is a legend that a cherry – a warm-loving tree by its nature – appeared in the city in the XVI century, and was brought with the traveling monks.

Cherry orchards covered the largest area of the city (there were up to 400 gardens). Vladimir cherry was so famous that its cherries were served to the Patriarch and the Royal family. In the Patriarch's garden today five varieties of cherry are cultivated, they are famous since the nineteenth century. One of them is the Russian standard in a comparison for all other varieties.

At this place in еру XII century Andrey Bogolyubsky founded his Prince's court and built a white stone Church of the Saviour. Only the foundation remained from it and a few bottom rows of masonry walls. St. Nicholas Church, which stands today on the site of an ancient White Saviour, was erected in the XVIII century.

The sightseeing point on the Spassky hill is brand new, from here you can look at the river Klyazma from a different angle and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the provincial town. And tired travellers can relax on a carved wooden bench under the shade of an ancient oak tree in the company of Pushkin's scholar cat.

From The Spassky hill starts on the historic Georgievskaya street where you can go to Georgievskaya Church and the Old pharmacy.

5. The Old Pharmacy (Георгиевская, 3).

This quiet corner, in the eyes of the pedestrian, curled up with a noisy Bolshaya Moscovskaya street to Georgievskaya street – was a witness of an amazing experiment, undertaken in the 1980-s. It was decided to return to that street the appearance it had in the nineteenth century. The restorers started, apparently, with the famous "Night. Street. Lantern. Pharmacy."... Although the pharmacy in the beginning of the Georgievskaya street, directly opposite of the Georgievskaya Church, really was. Opened in 1805 and was the first Vladimir's state pharmacy. Until this moment the town had one private pharmacy, stationed in the Virgin-Nativity monastery.

Копия Маршрут 1

Today there is no more pharmacy in this yellow building with the semicircular facade. But there is a local newspaper editorial office, antique shop and a rare book store. And that pharmacy № 1 existed a little longer than 200 years. Closed in 2010, but the big letters "PHARMACY" are still beckoning to roll down the alley, recreating the atmosphere of the Russian provincial town of the XIX century.

Don't forget to pay attention to the Georgievskaya Church – it the name of this Church was called the whole street. It was built on the site of the burned down in the fire of 1778 the ancient Church which was laid in the XII century by Yuri Dolgoruky at the princely court and was named in honor of its patron - Saint George.

The former church of the eighteenth century houses the Vladimir planetarium now. And it coexists with the Vladimir Kremlin – the residence of the Rozhdestvenskiy monastery, connected with the significant events in the Russian history. Here was buried the great Prince Alexander Nevsky. Here was created one of the oldest Russian Chronicles – the Laurentian Codex. Beginning with the half of the XIII century until the beginning of the XIV century the monastery was considered to be cathedral for the Russian metropolitans. And now, it is the current residence of the Vladimir-Suzdal Bishop.

In order not to confuse and not to get bored on lectures, it is better to choose a session in advance: about the astronomical misconceptions, prevalent in the modern world (about the "bad" solar flares, about the Mayan calendar and the end of the world, about asteroids and comets, "aimed" at the Earth, etc.), the evolution of the Universe, the moon or the sun, life in the Solar system or beyond it and many others.

Great interest in the visitors arouse quite rare exhibits: the Foucault pendulum, a large globe of the moon, the models of the first artificial satellites. Here is the only diorama in the country, showing the takeoff of the spaceship “Energia-Buran”.

2. «The Old Vladimir» museum (Kozlov Val street,14)

The museum exposition "The Old Vladimir" is located in the red brick building, built near Kozlov Val. It appeared in Vladimir in the nineteenth century, when the city began laying water pipe, and there was a need in a special building that served as the catchment water dispenser (interestingly, as such a building was seen even The Golden Gate, by that time, totally inactive). This is the first case in Russia when the museum was opened in the building of a water tower.

The Museum expositions represent a different view on the history of the city. Because history is not only a bloody battles and political intrigues, it is also the history of everyday life: the streets, home interiors of the citizens and their everyday apparel, Church shop, restaurant... Routine, work, studying- all life of the Vladimir residents until The Revolution of 1917 is shown on the three floors of the Water tower.

An excursion to the forge makes an unforgettable impression, so often among the visitors there are brave people who want to forge something with their own hands. Blacksmiths don't refuse and under their control offer to forge a nail, because a nail was a symbol of the beginning and the end of the house building in Russia. And the travellers always took a nail as a piece of their home.

8. The Assumption Cathedral (ул. Б. Московская, 56)

The Assumption Cathedral is literally a nail of all tourist programs in Vladimir. It is the beginning of the city. The erection of the Cathedral in 1158 – 1160 was the beginning of all events Vladimir has ever witnessed and participated in.

Копия Маршрут 1

The Cathedral itself became a participant of many significant events in the history of the city. Unlike the other ambitious architectural structure – The Golden Gate,The Assumption Cathedral keeps its form almost unchanged for more than 8 centuries. However, the original Cathedral was single-domed and considerably differed from the modern. The fire of 1185 in Vladimir damaged the appearance of the Cathedral, and almost completely destroyed the entire exterior and interior decor. Then the construction team, invited by the Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest (he inherited the Principality of Vladimir after Andrei Bogolyubsky), rebuilt the temple, changing its appearance, adding a gallery around the Cathedral and surrounding it with four new domes, without them today the Cathedralis hard to imagine.

But not only the exterior, although it is certainly worth of attention, is interesting in The Assumption Cathedral. It is well known that fragments of the painting, dating the XII century, belonged to the brush of Andrei Rublev, who worked together with Daniil Cherny on the invitation of the Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky.

10. St. Demetrius Cathedral (Bolshaya Moskovskaya street, 60)

St. Demetrius Cathedral – is a continuation of the white stone architectural traditions, founded by Andrey Bogolyubsky. It was built by Prince Vsevolod The Big Nest as the court cathedral and the name was chosen appropriate – in honor of his saint patron, Dmitriy Solunskiy. The modern intimacy of the Cathedral at the time was out of the question: in a single-domed building, surrounded by three porches, the choruses for the whole princely family were located, and to get on them near the temple was built a separate tower. But in the XIX century the researchers of the Cathedral were sure that the arches and the tower were of the later time and decided to get rid of them. As a result of this reconstruction, the white stone carving of the Cathedral was partially modified and even turned black. In this appearance the Cathedral stood until the early XX century: the arches and the tower were not built, but got rid of the black color.

Копия Маршрут 1

St. Demetrius Cathedral seems so tiny and cozy is in the far corner of the linden Park. The first impression the Cathedral makes by its stone carvings. Among the stone images are easily recognized even individual historical characters – king David, Emperor Alexander the great, the legendary Hercules, St. George. For a modern man it is hard to unravel the meaning of all the images on the walls of St. Demetrius Cathedral, but the stone reliefs could be read easily by a medieval man, whose consciousness was rooted in the depths of the Christian culture.

Inside the Cathedral, just like in The Assumption Cathedral, are preserved the fragments of frescoes of the XII century. To get inside the Cathedral will not be difficult – currently there is an open a Museum exhibition, the main exhibit of which is the Cathedral itself.

11. The Historical Museum (Bolshaya Moskovskaya street, 64)

The Historical Museum in Vladimir is a rich source of a new knowledge and impressions. The exposition of the Museum covers a huge time period from the prehistoric times to the twentieth century. The history of Vladimir begins not with the foundation of the city, as it might seem, but with the appearance in this territory the first man. It happened near the modern borders of the city, in the area of Sungir, where in 1956 were accidentally found some ancient graves. Now the professionals and ordinary people know that Sungir is the oldest encampment of prehistoric man in Central Europe, and the graves and objects found in Sungir were dated as 30,000 thousand years ago.
