The Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya church

The Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya church

The Spaso-Preobrazhenskaya church is located on the place of Andrey Bogoliubskiy's princely court, where the church of the Saviour was built in the year of 1164. The Zlatovratski Spassky monastery was located there until the year of 1764. The church has acquired its modern name in honor of the religious holiday called the Transfiguration, popularly known as the Apple Spas. The church was built in the late XVIII century on the place of an earlier church that had been destroyed by a city fire in 1778. Archaeological excavations unrevealed that an ancient church was like the church of Pokrova on the Nerl river.

There is a white stone chapel near the church, built in memory of killed Orthodox warriors.

On December 16, 1937, the Vladimir city's council closed the church "as dormant due to the lack of community and the clergy". In the beginning of the 1990-s the church was returned to the Vladimir eparchy. Now it is on service.
