CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE THE VICTORIOUS

CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE THE VICTORIOUS

in the center of the city of Vladimir, in the "Earth City", there is a church in the name of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious. It is mentioned in the chronicles along with other churches built by Grand Duke Yuri Dolgoruky. As it appears in the ancient records of this church, the temple was founded in his Grand Ducal court in 1129, and the construction of the white-stone church was completed in 1157 by his son, the Holy Pious Grand Duke Andrei Bogolyubsky. In 1783-1784, the church was rebuilt in the provincial Baroque style on the foundation of the former church, which was badly damaged by fire . The painting on the walls and vaults of the temple appeared in the early XIX century. Later, in 1847, a monument in honor of Prince Vladimir was added to the church.

In ancient times, there was a monastery at St. George's Church, the foundation of which dates back to 1153. It is mentioned in chronicles in the XVI and XVII centuries. At first it was founded as a women's monastery, and then it operated as a men's monastery. In 1778, after the widespread secularization of church lands and the closure of many monasteries by imperial decrees, the former monastery, which had already become a parish church of St. George, burned down. After receiving permission to reopen the church in 1783, the masonry of the same ancient white stone was completed in 1784, and in 1796 the church was consecrated and remains unchanged to the present day.

In the cold St. George's Church there are two ancient tombs, which have inscriptions indicating that such important historical figures as the mother and brother of the holy Prince Alexander Nevsky are buried here. The church was closed to parishioners in the early 30s of the XX century, and these years left a characteristic note – the head of the church was literally riddled with bullet holes. Further, the church was used for the needs of Soviet institutions, including as a workshop of an oil and fat factory and a sausage smokehouse. A survey of the church revealed a layer of greasy black soot on the frescoes of the main volume, about one centimeter thick. For some time, the Choir Music Center was located inside the temple and concerts were held.

On May 6, 2006, the church was officially returned to the Vladimir Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. On August 8, 2008, Saint Antimins was laid on the main Altar of the temple complex with the relics of the Holy Martyrs of Khozevit, and with the blessing of His Eminence Evlogy, Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal, from that day on, regular non-permissive services were resumed in the church, which are performed on all holidays and Sundays.
