MONUMENT TO THE VLADIMIR CHERRY

MONUMENT TO THE VLADIMIR CHERRY

An unusual monument to the cherry tree appeared in Vladimir not by chance: in pre-revolutionary times, Vladimir was known throughout Russia thanks to the cherry tree that grew here. There is a legend that the cherry-by nature a thermophilic tree-appeared in the city in the XVI century, and it was brought by wandering monks. Cherry orchards covered most of the city (there were up to 400 orchards). The Vladimir cherry was so famous that its fruits were served to the table of the Patriarch and the royal family. In the Patriarch's Garden, five varieties of cherries, known since the XIX century, are still grown today. One of them is recognized as a Russian standard - it is compared with all other varieties.
